Postdoctoral Researcher in Economics of Carbon and Biodiversity Markets at Trinity Business School, Trinity College Dublin

Farmland sustainability credits present a potential mechanism to deliver environmental goods on a large scale. These credits are already operational in Australia and are currently being developed in the UK.

The School of Natural Science and Business at TCD is embarking on a research project exploring the effectiveness of farmland sustainability credits in providing cost-effective climate and biodiversity benefits in agricultural supply chains. The research will also involve designing financial instruments for packaging sustainability goods, assessing the willingness of landowners (primarily farmers) to participate, and evaluating the interest of (agri-food) corporations to pay for these credits.

The project will also delve into the necessary regulations for the efficient functioning of the market and preventing market failure, ultimately making recommendations to public regulators.

Professor Yvonne Buckley is leading the project, with Professor Jane Stout in a task leadership role. The postdoctoral researcher will be under the supervision of Associate Professor Martha O'Hagan Luff.

This position is seeking a highly motivated post-doc with a background in economics, policy, or business to join the team and be responsible for:

  • Surveying international sustainability credit markets and interviewing key participants
  • Assisting in the design of Farmland Sustainability Credit and conducting workshops with essential stakeholder groups
  • Analysing the Farmland Sustainability Credit design from a game theoretic perspective
  • Simulating market dynamics to explore potential market failures

The project is in collaboration with Allied Irish Bank, Ireland's largest bank, and Carbery, Ireland's third-largest dairy cooperative. The ideal candidate will excel in teamwork, showcase high motivation, and aim for substantial impact. While quantitative skills can be acquired on the job, candidates with existing quantitative expertise will be given preference.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Public Policy, Development, Environmental Economics, Natural Resource Management, Sustainability in Business, ESG Investing, or a related field
  • Alternatively, four years of industry experience in a related area

Desired attributes:

  • Understanding of carbon and/or biodiversity credits
  • Familiarity with game theory and its application in real-world scenarios
  • Proficiency in quantitative skills (e.g., Python, R) for simulating market dynamics and exploring potential failures
  • Experience in conducting in-person workshops with diverse stakeholder groups (farmers, corporates, regulators)

For further details, kindly reach out to Cian White and Yvonne Buckley. Interested candidates are requested to submit a cover letter detailing their interests and skills, a CV, and a sample of recent research/work showcasing the desired attributes.
