Summary of Post

Breast cancer brain metastases (BCBM) are a common and aggressive form of metastatic spread with limited treatment options. The selected candidate will join Prof Leonie Young and her team to identify the molecular mechanisms that govern the development of metastasis in breast cancer and determine key controllers of metastatic spread. This research project is supported by an Interreg Atlantic Area grant. The main goal of this investigation is to explore the mechanisms of breast cancer brain metastasis using advanced patient model systems. The study will entail pinpointing potential drivers and new therapeutic targets in breast cancer models. The initiative will establish 3D cell culture systems in combination with innovative hydrogels derived from marine organisms. These patient models will be utilized for drug screenings to assess therapy response in breast cancer. Various molecular biology approaches will be utilized, including cell and organoid culture, transcriptomics, protein, and sequencing analysis. The research will be carried out in a highly collaborative setting. The successful applicant will be responsible for designing and executing experimental plans, overseeing study implementation, analyzing experimental data, drafting manuscripts, and providing guidance to a PhD student. In addition, the applicant will be required to contribute to other ongoing research endeavors in the lab.

Specifically, the responsibilities of the position include:

  • To lead a study examining the mechanisms of breast cancer brain metastasis using advanced patient model systems
  • To independently devise, conduct, analyze, and oversee multiple experiments simultaneously
  • To maintain precise, comprehensive records of experimental data and procedures
  • To create visually compelling data representations for publications and presentations
  • To collaborate in a team setting and, when necessary, train new personnel and guide undergraduate and postgraduate students as needed
  • To participate in the development of impactful peer-reviewed scientific publications and to share research findings at national and international conferences

Qualifications – (Necessary):

  • The applicant must have an advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in the field of cancer research/molecular biology or a related discipline

Knowledge & Experience – (Necessary):

  • Proficiency in standard molecular biology techniques including western blot, PCR, tissue culture, immunohistochemistry, and confocal microscopy
  • Capability in statistical analysis

We are fully aware that imposter syndrome and lack of confidence can at times deter exceptional candidates from applying, so please do not hesitate to submit an application – we are eager to hear from you.
