Overview

Systems Engineer, Managed Operations at Amazon Web Services (AWS).

AWS is introducing the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) as part of its Utility Computing (UC) initiative. The role focuses on building and leading operations and development teams to deliver high-availability AWS services (EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, Bedrock) exclusively for EU customers. Responsibilities
  • Oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025, collaborating with global AWS teams to influence the evolution of AWS services and technology.
  • Work with technology leaders to enhance day-to-day operations and improve availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of ESC.
  • Help build a best-in-class development, engineering, and operations team aligned with AWS customer satisfaction and ongoing innovation.
  • Operate and improve one of the largest software systems, review operational health, document root causes, and follow change management for production changes.
  • Participate in on-call rotations to resolve incidents outside regular hours.
Eligibility and Basic Qualifications
  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
  • Candidate must be a national of an EU member state and residing in the EU to operate the ESC.
  • Relocation support is provided for successful applicants relocating within the EU.
  • Employees will participate in an on-call rota.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science (or related IT discipline) or equivalent industry experience.
  • Knowledge/experience in scripting (Bash, Python, Ruby) or software development (Java, TypeScript, or similar), with Linux and networking fundamentals to troubleshoot and optimize system performance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to execute standard operating procedures and follow operational best practices.
  • Knowledge/experience operating services in AWS or other cloud environments.
  • Experience with 24x7 high-availability distributed applications, performance tuning, and monitoring frameworks (e.g., CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic).
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
