AWS is set to introduce the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC), marking a significant development in Utility Computing (UC). We are seeking experienced systems engineers with a strong background in cloud operations to join the AWS Managed Operations team. You will help build and lead operations and development teams delivering high-availability AWS services, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers. Your responsibilities will encompass overseeing the launch of the ESC in 2025, working with global AWS teams, and influencing the evolution of AWS services and technology. A typical day involves collaborating with technology leaders, enhancing day-to-day operations, and improving availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC.

The overarching goal is to deliver scalable services and ensure a high-availability experience for EU customers. Utility Computing (UC)
• European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) is part of AWS Utility Computing (UC). AWS UC provides product innovations—from foundational services such as S3 and EC2 to new product innovations that keep AWS at the forefront. As a UC member, you'll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (IoT), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS. Managed Operations engineers engage with AWS customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.

The Day-to-Day

You'll spend the majority of your time operating and improving one of the largest software systems. Each week, you will review operational health, write actionable bug reports when anomalies are found, and follow change management processes before making changes to production systems. You'll also help resolve backlog items and share a useful script with the team to aid root-cause analysis.

You will be required to participate in an on-call rotation to resolve incidents occurring out of hours.

Eligibility requirements

• Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
• Candidate must be a national of an EU member state and reside in the EU to operate the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
• Amazon will provide relocation support for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.
• Employees will participate in an On-Call rota.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

• This role requires you to be a national of an EU member state
• Bachelor's degree in computer science (or related IT discipline) or equivalent industry experience
• Knowledge or experience in scripting (Bash, Python, or Ruby) or software development (Java, TypeScript, or similar), coupled with Linux and networking fundamentals to troubleshoot and optimize performance and reliability

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Able to execute standard operating procedures and follow operational best practices
• Knowledge or experience operating services in AWS or other cloud systems
• Knowledge or experience operating 24x7 high-availability, distributed software applications, performance tuning, and monitoring frameworks (CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic or similar)
• Knowledge or experience with Infrastructure as Code (CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar)
