Dublin, Dublin City, Ireland Global Nomadic Full time
Overview

Volunteer: Protecting Marine Giants: Safeguarding Marine Life in Italy's Dolphins and Whales Sanctuary at Global Nomadic. This 6-day sailing expedition aboard the Jean Gab off the Italian coast offers hands-on wildlife conservation experience while exploring the Mediterranean. Volunteers join a dedicated team in search of whales and dolphins and contribute to monitoring and protecting these species in their natural habitat.

The Experience

Your home from home will be aboard the Jean Gab, a vessel that primarily navigates under sail. Your stay on this unique floating laboratory will be dedicated to engaging research activities, working alongside experts. Every day spent at sea, subject to project requirements and weather, promises new adventures and discoveries. As a valued team member, you'll monitor dolphins in their habitat, recording data such as geographic position, group size, composition, and surface activity patterns. Acoustic recordings of vocalizations will also contribute to understanding dolphin behavior and conservation efforts. You will also help record the presence of other marine species.

Responsibilities
  • Monitor and protect dolphins in their natural habitat; record geographic position, group size, composition, and surface activity patterns; acquire acoustic recordings of vocalizations.
  • Record presence of other marine species, including sea turtles, tuna, swordfish, fish schools, mantas, moonfish, and marine birds.
Logistics

Arrival at Naples (Capodichino) International Airport; you will be guided to the island where the boat awaits. You will stay in a shared cabin aboard the cutter ship, with basic bathroom and kitchen facilities. The crew will teach you sailing basics, including rigging, steering, hoisting, and handling sails. Life aboard encourages a simple, communal, and eco-conscious lifestyle.
