Purpose of Position The appointee will be required to lecture in the area of education, at undergraduate and postgraduate level, on full time and part time programmes. In particular, lecturing on topics such as contemporary educational practices, the educational landscape in an Irish context, educational policy and policy drivers, research methods in education, applied research projects in education, academic skills and practices. They will also act as programme director for a newly developing Master's in Education, and will be required to input on the development of the new Masters programme. The School of Business and Social Sciences The newly formed School of Business and Social Sciences at NCI brings together a number of NCI's long standing, well established disciplines under the one School. The Social Sciences section of the School now incorporates our education programmes. The school delivers programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level on both a full-time and part-time basis, in the areas of initial teacher education for the Further Education and Training (FET) sector, early childhood education, adult and workforce education and professional development for educators. Additional roles will include providing academic support for the P-TECH Project. P-TECH is an innovative model of education-industry collaboration. This initiative is designed to tackle educational disadvantage and to provide secondary students in the area with an enriching educational experience to develop skills, realise their potential as learners and to connect to new learning and career pathways beyond school. The model combines second-level school education with elements of third-level education and work experiences such as mentorship and internships. For more information see: This element of the role will include pedagogic design, liaison with project partners, engagement and leadership of the QQI processes, and the development of follow-up activities to support teachers in the delivery of the modules. As a member of the Education faculty the post-holder will also contribute to wider teaching, research and programme development activities in the area of Education. The role therefore also involves responsibilities in relation to the professional development of teachers and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Reporting to: Dean of School of Business and Social Sciences, Vice-Dean for Social Sciences Key Relationships: Dean of School of Business and Social Sciences Vice-Dean for Social Sciences Colleagues in the School P-TECH Project Office All P-TECH Stakeholders Net work members of practice across in teaching and education Faculty and Associate Faculty in Education General responsibilities as a Lecturer: Teaching: Teaching responsibilities within Education programmes Teaching and Programme Director responsibilities on Masters programmes. Design and deliver curriculum and education interventions Engage in the assessment processes of the College by setting and marking examinations and assignments and attending assessment boards and liaising with external examiners. Set, correct and give written feedback on project work, research work and dissertation. Undertake the duties of the role in accordance with the requirements of the College Quality Assurance arrangement. Facilitate skills development workshops. Liaise with library re: reading materials, booklists, etc. Develop new and existing course material, using new learning technology and delivery mechanisms in particular. Assist in the drafting of submission documents, liaise with the validating bodies, promote, implement and review programmes. Programme Development: Assist in the development of new and existing programmes. This may involve drafting submission documents, liaison with the validating bodies, promoting, implementing and reviewing programmes. Research: Carry out research relevant to College activities including regular publications and presentations in peer reviewed journals and presentations at both national and international conferences. Key PTECH Responsibilities: Design, develop and validation of P-Tech modules. Liaising with P-TECH Project Office. Ongoing development of module content, structure and assessment design for TY, 5th, 6th Years. Ongoing development of Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) for L6 programme inc. development of bespoke resources, videos, course books, assessments, activities, teacher resources and tools. Developing an evaluation tool to support continuous improvement of P-TECH. Ongoing development and delivery of L9 programme. This includes provision of information sessions, orientation, class delivery, assessments and management of academic administrative processes. Expansion of programme to additional schools where relevant including supporting outreach communication trainings. General: Assist in the development of Education and potentially and any new school or faculty structures as part of college strategy Act as programme director for undergraduate or postgraduate programmes if required Participate in College meetings as appropriate. Contribute to academic and disciplinary committees as requested. Be available to students outside of class contact hours for guidance and support. Represent the college at functions and promotional events such as exhibitions, school visits, open days, recruitment evenings and other external events. Act as a tutor and mentor when necessary. Work on short courses, training and consultancy. Visit students and employers as part of the college's industrial placement programme. Key Requirements: The appointee will be an expert in educational theory and practice The appointee will be experienced in the scholarship of teaching & learning and educational practice. Qualifications & Experience Required: PhD qualification in Education or connected discipline is essential An active research track in the scholarship of teaching & learning and educational practice Knowledge of QQI or similar programme validation policies and practices Ability to prepare course material and programme documentation Ability to build relationships and collaborate Adherence to professional standards of teaching Ex cellent communication skills, time management and PC skills. The appointee will have experience of lecturing/teaching in Higher Education or Further Education settings.
