Overview
The role of the Architectural Conservation Officer is essential to support local communities and owners of protected structures and is a key part of customer service. Wexford has historic towns, villages and places contributing to the County’s special character.
Responsibilities
The Executive Architectural Conservation Officer will assist in regeneration and development programs in historic towns, villages and heritage sites, and in heritage-based projects central to tourism strategies.
Provide stewardship to ensure protection and use of protected structures by advising and running grant schemes such as BHIS to leverage investment in heritage.
Education, Training & Experience
Each candidate must, on the latest date for receipt of completed application forms:
Hold a recognised NFQ Level 8 qualification in a technical discipline related to the built environment (architecture, structural engineering, building surveying, or spatial/town/urban planning).
Or hold an NFQ Level 8 qualification in which the historic built environment was a major subject (e.g., archaeology, history of art, or architectural conservation).
Or hold a recognised postgraduate NFQ Levels 9 or 10 qualification in which the historic built environment was a major subject (e.g., archaeology, history of art, or architectural conservation).
After attaining the qualification above, candidates should have five years’ satisfactory relevant experience (four years for registered architects). They should have a satisfactory knowledge of architectural heritage, design and conservation, strategic planning and urban design, and the legal framework governing architectural conservation and planning. A high standard of technical training and experience appropriate to the work, including administrative experience, and satisfactory knowledge of public service organisation or ability to acquire it are required.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications
Postgraduate qualification (NFQ Levels 9 or 10) in architectural conservation, spatial planning, architectural design or urban design; or a postgraduate qualification related to the theory and practice of architectural conservation, strategic planning, architectural design or urban design; or recognised accreditation in architectural conservation.
Demonstrable experience in strategic planning, urban design and/or architectural conservation management.
Experience and/or qualification in project management.
