About the Role

The successful candidate will be a vital part of our laboratory team, responsible for providing excellent support across various disciplines to deliver a high-quality service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Sample Support: Ensuring all samples are prepared and ready for analysis in line with clinical requirements.
  • Laboratory Operations: Assisting in routine operations and development of the laboratory specimen reception to meet changing needs.
  • Work Management: Prioritizing and managing own work following laboratory standard operating procedures/policies, including receiving, sorting, prioritizing, unpacking, checking, labelling, delivering, preparing, and storing samples.
  • Sample Preparation: Preparing samples for analysis by centrifuging, separating, pipetting serum, measuring, recording volumes, and determining sample pH to ensure suitability for analysis.
  • Data Entry: Accurately entering and checking patient request information onto the laboratory computer system.
  • Test Booking: Booking in electronically ordered laboratory tests.
  • Problem Resolution: Dealing with problem samples and referring to team leaders/senior laboratory staff as necessary, rejecting unsuitable specimens and documenting on the laboratory computer system according to protocol.
  • Communication: Communicating sample suitability information to recognized users.
  • Referral and Returns: Prioritizing, recording, and packaging samples for referral to local and mainland UK laboratories, ensuring correct packaging and transportation without delay.
  • Monitoring and Information Provision: Monitoring mainland UK referral returns and providing information to service users regarding sample and transport requirements.
  • Stock Management: Maintaining adequate stocks of laboratory consumables and reporting to senior laboratory staff when replacements are required.
  • Receiving and Storing Goods: Receiving, checking, delivering, and storing goods as needed.
  • Cover and Reporting: Providing cover for preparing orders, collating, and dispatching reports to users.
  • Maintenance and Equipment Operation: Operating, monitoring, and maintaining equipment associated with sample preparation and storage, including centrifuges, safety cabinets, laboratory pipettes, fridges, and freezers.
  • Record Keeping: Keeping records as required.
  • Appointments and Specimen Collection: Arranging appointments and preparing bottles and incubators for cryoglobulins, collecting specimens directly from wards and clinics.
  • Measuring and Solution Preparation: Measuring, weighing, and preparing solutions for laboratory use.
  • Scanning and Archiving: Carrying out scanning, archiving, and recalling request forms, dealing with patient, client, and service users at specimen reception and on the telephone.
  • Cleaning and Waste Disposal: Performing housekeeping duties, including removal and disposal of laboratory/confidential waste, laundry of white coats, keeping the workplace tidy, disinfecting/cleaning equipment, and workplace.

Essential Criteria:

GCSEs: 5 qualifications, with 3 at C or higher in Science, Maths, and English.
