This Archivist role is a dynamic and challenging position that plays a critical part in preserving and promoting the County's rich heritage.
The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing an Archives Plan, ensuring the safekeeping of historical documents, and collaborating with various stakeholders to deliver high-quality archival services.
This full-time position comes with a Temporary three-year Fixed Term Contract and offers opportunities for professional growth and development in a supportive and collaborative environment.
Responsibilities:- Develop and implement an effective Archives Plan, incorporating public and stakeholder consultation to ensure the best possible outcomes.
- Establish and manage the County Council archive responsibilities, including preparing work plans to support the Archives Plan.
- Prepare, manage, and implement the County Archives Development Plan, which includes auditing current archival material, identifying other relevant collections, and assessing existing archival service provision.
- Collaborate with various departments and advisory teams to develop and deliver the archives service, participate in the Heritage Team to enhance heritage management and promotion, and establish and maintain professional networks.
- Ensure archive services adhere to professional standards for curation, security, and data protection, develop and maintain policies and documentation.
- Maintain service metrics, ensure compliance with legal requirements, and provide analysis and reports.
- Submit quarterly reports to the relevant authorities and produce an annual report, liaising with stakeholders to ensure alignment and progress.
- Provide expert advice to the Council on archives-related matters, including legal obligations concerning archives.
- Apply for and deliver projects funded by external sources, manage performance and service delivery to meet targets and policies.
- Participate as a member of the County Heritage Forum and oversee day-to-day operations once frontline archive services are operational.
- Assess and select archives for priority conservation and digitisation, organise programmes, exhibitions, events, and activities, and promote public engagement with archival holdings and local history.
- Hold a recognised qualification in Archival Studies, with relevant satisfactory experience in archival work.
- Desirable: knowledge of legal and regulatory frameworks governing archives, ability to deliver high-quality customer service, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, experience collaborating with other departments and external agencies, adaptability and continuous service improvement.
- Remuneration in line with Circulars issued by the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, scale determined at entry with standard progression.
- 35 hours per week, with the right to alter hours as required.
- Blended Working policy supports flexible and balanced working arrangements, remote work up to two days per week may be possible where suitable for the role and subject to operational requirements.
- Reside in the district or within reasonable distance as determined by SDCC.
- Applicable local authority pension schemes and PRSI contributions, details provided in the contract terms.
- Standard probation procedures, Garda Vetting prior to appointment, two satisfactory references required, canvassing prohibited.
