Job Overview

The Clinical Nurse Manager plays a vital role in fostering an environment that supports professional nurses in delivering exceptional patient care. This predominantly clinical position has a strong educational focus.

Main Responsibilities
  1. Leadership and Accountability: In the absence of the CNM, you are accountable for Bed Management, Staffing, Clinical Practice, Standards, Quality, and striving for safer better healthcare.
  2. Patient Accommodation: Assist in implementing bed management policies by managing patient accommodation, planning admission, and ensuring activities are carried out appropriately.
  3. Workload Estimation and Allocation: Decide and allocate work to be done by staff nurses, student nurses, and healthcare assistants, ensuring systematic assessment of individual patient needs and proper documentation.
  4. Staffing and Manpower Planning: Prepare weekly duty rosters, review and adjust as necessary, advise on staff levels, arrange meal breaks, support and supervise nursing and support staff, monitor attendance and absenteeism, and plan nursing teams to meet workload and ensure continuity of patient care.
  5. Personnel: Promote high staff morale and team spirit, ensure welfare and safety policies are adhered to, receive visiting professionals and lay visitors, contribute to ward orientation, ensure staff practice within the code of the profession, report and investigate incidents and complaints per hospital policy.
  6. Education/Staff Development: Identify training needs, contribute to development of training programmes, participate in planning, implementing, and evaluating staff development to support clinical services, support postgraduate training where relevant, participate in induction training for new nursing staff, ensure policies are known and implemented, and contribute to teaching and training of learner nurses.
  7. Clinical Nursing Practice: Use a nursing framework to assess patient needs and plan appropriate care, ensure documentation and reporting systems are accurate, liaise with ward staff to complete procedural preparation, maintain clinical competence, direct and mentor staff, order stores and supplies.
  8. Standards and Quality of Care: Safeguard patient welfare, promote National Standards for Safer Better Healthcare, monitor quality indicators and ward audits, ensure staff understand and adhere to standards, check quality of work, monitor outcomes and safety, ensure HIQA hygiene standards, participate in ward audits.
