The role of a Fisheries Officer is to implement and enforce relevant statutory provisions related to fisheries management.
There are two main areas of responsibility:
- Fisheries Protection: Patrol lakes, rivers, sea, coast, and estuaries to check for illegal fishing. Detect and report pollution, take samples, and gather information.
- Fisheries Conservation and Development: Contribute to habitat improvement schemes, conduct research survey work, and monitor scientific data.
In this role, you will work collaboratively with an experienced team to:
- Patrol bodies of water to prevent and detect illegal activities
- Detect and report pollution incidents
- Inspect commercial Salmon & Sea Trout licence holders
- Assist with general enquiries from the public
- Communicate with external stakeholders

- Issue Fixed Penalty Notices
- Apprehend offenders, gather evidence, attend proceedings, give evidence, provide reports for legal advisers
- Operate and maintain boats
- Maintain surveillance equipment
- Support team members in stake-outs at night/early morning
- Stay up-to-date with legislation and relevant scientific developments
- Contribute to habitat improvement schemes
- Conduct research survey work and monitor scientific data
- Evaluate electro-fishing and netting results
- Provide assistance for angling festivals and competitions
This role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and near bodies of water.
You should have:
- A valid full Category B driving license
- Experience working on boats or in environmental roles
- No convictions under the Irish Fisheries Legislation
- Eligibility to work in Ireland
- Fluent English language skills
- Good computer skills including MS Office
- Residency close to base location (within 60 minutes' drive)
- Competence in and on the water
The ideal candidate will have:
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Flexibility in work hours and travel requirements
The salary scale for this position corresponds to that of a Fisheries Officer in Inland Fisheries Ireland.
An unsocial hour's allowance may be payable based on the number of unsocial hours worked.
