Our Laboratory is equipped with automated, high quality and technologically advanced equipment. The team comprises highly qualified scientists and pathologists, all essential to accurate diagnostics and patient care.

Our Laboratory comprises five main specialties: Blood Transfusion, Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Histopathology and Microbiology. All five specialties hold ISO 15189 accreditation (INAB reference 242MT). Details are available through the INAB website.

Overall Purpose of Medical Scientist Role

To assist in routine processing and coordinate the Laboratory service in accordance with the Hospital\'s mission, values, vision and strategic plan. The role will require the ability to work in Histology and to perform laboratory tests, with responsibility for processing and authorising under the direction of the Senior Medical Scientist and Laboratory Manager. This is a permanent contract and includes participation in Multi-Disciplinary on-call following training.

Responsibilities and Deliverables
  • Assist in writing, maintaining and enforcing procedures relating to all areas of the laboratory and its related testing equipment.
  • Assist in applying and implementing operational procedures to optimise resource use and ensure best-practice standards.
  • Assist in implementing a quality management programme that is patient-centred and includes measurement and audits of performance and client satisfaction.
Service Delivery
  • Perform scientific work to the required INAB and JCI Accreditation Standards, as directed by the Senior Medical Scientist and Laboratory Manager.
  • Prioritise and organise work during busy periods and coordinate multiple concurrent tests.
  • Co-operate with relevant staff on new ideas and technologies in line with Hospital policies.
  • Register and custody of Laboratory stocks in accordance with policy.
  • Record details of non-conformances, complaints and defects in supplies and equipment; investigate and report findings as required.
  • Facilitate and participate with medical and scientific staff in various research projects.
  • Engage in professional development through self-learning and formal courses or on-the-job training.
Staff Management
  • Participate in training of the laboratory team as required.
  • Maintain professionalism, punctuality and open communication within the laboratory team and with hospital clients.
  • Communicate clearly and courteously with team members and clients.
Health and Safety
  • Ensure effective safety procedures comply with the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act as per hospital policy.
  • Assist and cooperate with Laboratory Management in developing procedures to prevent and manage accidents in the Laboratory area.
Quality
  • Participate in implementing quality management programmes.
  • Actively participate in internal and external quality control and assurance programmes.
  • Adhere to codes and guidelines relating to professional practice and maintain Quality Assurance standards.
Information Technology
  • Participate in developing the laboratory information system for the department as required.
  • Support collection, interpretation and presentation of data on Department activity, staffing and expenditure per reporting needs.
Review
  • Laboratory and individual objectives are facilitated by regular review in line with Laboratory Management.
  • Any other duties deemed appropriate; duties may change over time.
Flexibility
  • This post requires a high level of flexibility to deliver an effective service; duties may be adjusted by management as required.
Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Possess membership or be eligible for membership of the Academy of Clinical Science and Laboratory Medicine (ACSLM) / CORU or equivalent.
