Job Title: Healthcare Scientist AssistantDescription:

The primary objective of this role is to provide technical support and assistance to Biomedical Scientists in ensuring a professional laboratory service.

The post holder will be responsible for working as an integral member of the Laboratory team and contributing to the delivery of a high-quality laboratory service.

  • Prepare samples according to clinical need and ensure they are ready for analysis.
  • Assist in the routine operation and development of the laboratory specimen reception, adapting to changing needs.
  • Manage own work efficiently, adhering to laboratory standard operating procedures/policies.
  • Receive, sort, and prioritize all samples arriving at Specimen Reception for processing.
  • Carefully prepare samples for analysis.
  • Accurately enter and check patient request information onto the laboratory computer system.
  • Address problem samples and refer to team leaders/senior laboratory staff if necessary.
  • Communicate information to recognized users regarding sample suitability.
  • Prioritize, record, and package samples for referral to local and Mainland UK laboratories.
  • Monitor Mainland UK referral returns.
  • Provide information to service users regarding sample and transport requirements.
  • Maintain adequate stocks of laboratory consumables and report replacements to senior laboratory staff.
  • Receive, check, deliver, and store goods as required.
  • Offer support in preparing orders, collating, and despatching reports to users.
  • Operate, monitor, and maintain equipment associated with sample preparation and storage.
  • Keep records as necessary.
  • Arrange appointments and prepare bottles and incubators for Cryoglobulins and collect specimens directly from wards and clinics.
  • Measure, weigh, and prepare solutions for laboratory use.
  • Carry out scanning, archiving, and recalling request forms, dealing with patients, clients, and service users at Specimen Reception and over the telephone.
  • Perform housekeeping duties, including removing and disposing of laboratory/confidential waste, laundering white coats, keeping the workplace tidy, disinfecting/cleaning equipment, and performing other tasks as needed.
