Environmental Conservation Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Ecological Consultant to join our team in Galway. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting ecological surveys, preparing environmental reports, supporting planning applications, and contributing to biodiversity and conservation strategies across a range of habitats and project types.
- Conduct field surveys, including habitat mapping, flora and fauna assessments (e.g. bat, bird, amphibian, aquatic).
- Undertake Appropriate Assessments (AA), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIA), and other statutory reporting.
- Prepare high-quality technical reports, mapping, and ecological inputs for planning submissions and EIARs.
- Liaise with clients, stakeholders, and statutory bodies such as NPWS, IFI, and local authorities.
- Contribute to biodiversity action plans and ecological management plans.
- Assist in environmental monitoring and mitigation during construction phases.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including the Habitats and Birds Directives and Wildlife Acts.
- BSc or MSc in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 2–4 years of relevant experience in ecological consultancy or a similar field.
- Experience with Irish and EU environmental legislation, particularly the Habitats Directive.
- Proficiency in habitat mapping using Fossitt classification and GIS (e.g. QGIS or ArcGIS).
- Full clean driving licence.
- Protected species licences (e.g. bats, newts).
- Membership of CIEEM or working toward it.
- Knowledge of freshwater/marine ecosystems (if applicable to projects).
- Experience preparing Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) or Nature-Based Solutions reports.
- Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Flexible approach to working hours during peak survey seasons.
The key responsibilities of this role include:
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop and implement ecological strategies.
- Providing expert advice on environmental matters to clients and stakeholders.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with clients, stakeholders, and statutory bodies.
- Contributing to the development of company policies and procedures related to ecology.
- Staying up-to-date with changes in legislation and regulations affecting the industry.
