Job Title

A key aspect of Ireland's digital infrastructure involves managing electricity demand from Large Energy Users (LEUs), primarily driven by data centre developments.

Between 2015 and 2023, the electricity consumption used by data centres rose significantly from 5% to 21% of Ireland's total demand, accounting for a substantial 85% of overall electricity demand growth.

This upward trend is mainly attributed to an increase in data centre investments and expansions in Ireland.

The country has ambitious renewable energy targets, with notable success in delivering renewable energy projects.

Ireland aims to become a global leader in renewable energy production and is also a world leader in digital technologies, R&D, and manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and ICT infrastructure and devices.

Many data centres have set up operations in Ireland, providing employment opportunities and data services for other enterprises.

The CRU published a consultation paper on the Review of Large Energy User Connection Policy in 2024, inviting responses from interested parties until COB Friday, 04 April 2025.

Feedback from this proposed decision will inform a final decision to be published later in 2025.
